What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a hands-on therapeutic approach grounded in anatomy and physiology. Using gentle touch, the practitioner listens and responds to subtle patterns and changes within the body, working with the whole person without manipulation or force.
Through light touch, deep listening and a relationship with stillness, Craniosacral Therapy creates an opportunity for the body to settle, rebalance and reset, allowing change to emerge from within and at its own pace. People often describe the experience as an opportunity to reconnect with themselves and feel more at home in their own body.
I'm a facilitator of one's healing process. I'm sensitive enough to know people are going to heal themselves, and I'm willing to help do it."
Dr. John E. Upledger
What happens during a session?
Your first appointment will usually begin with a conversation about your health, wellbeing and the reasons for your visit. You'll remain clothed and either lie on a treatment table or sit, whichever is more comfortable for you. There's no manipulation or force involved; your practitioner listens through touch, and responds only to what they notice. Many people find sessions deeply relaxing, but relaxation is a by-product of the approach, not the whole of it: throughout, your practitioner is actively engaged, skilled and attentive. Sessions typically last around 60 minutes.
During a typical session, you can expect to:
Talk
Your practitioner will begin by understanding what has brought you to the session.
Get comfortable
You'll remain fully clothed, usually lying on a treatment couch.
Gentle contact
Your practitioner uses light, non-invasive touch throughout the session.
Time to settle
Sessions provide space for your body to rest and respond.
Craniosacral therapy is not intended as primary healthcare but to work alongside the service provided by your doctor.
In the longer term
Craniosacral Therapy aims to support the body's own ability to restore balance over time. While everyone's experience is different, many people describe feeling more resilient, more connected to themselves and better equipped to meet the physical and emotional demands of everyday life.
People often report experiencing:
Greater resilience
Feeling better able to manage stress and life's challenges.
Improved sleep and relaxation
Supporting deeper rest and recovery.
Reduced tension and discomfort
With a greater sense of physical ease.
Enhanced wellbeing
Feeling calmer, more balanced and more present in daily life.

CST supports both physical and emotional wellbeing and the CSTA is committed to showing its benefits. In partnership with Measure Well Ltd, practitioners are using the Warwick Holistic Health Questionnaire to track client outcomes. Early results from 2023 to 2025 show clients experience meaningful improvements in whole-person wellbeing, including reduced anxiety, improved sleep and better stress management.
This work also helps practitioners understand who is accessing CST and why, enabling more tailored communication and better service delivery. By measuring outcomes, the CSTA is building a strong evidence base to demonstrate the value of CST for clients and the wider community.
